The Müglitz is an approximately 49 km long, left tributary of the Elbe and rises in the Czech Republic as Mohelnice on the northeast slope of the 881 m high Cínovecký hřbet (Zinnwalder Berg). West of the source was the village of Vorderzinnwald, which was demolished after 1945. Flowing to the east, it forms the meandering 4 km German-Czech border. In the upper reaches it is called the Weiße Müglitz. After taking up the Voitsdorfer Bach, it flows north.

At the village of Müglitz at the former Hartmannsmühle, it enters Saxon territory. At Fürstenwalde it takes up the Schwarzbach (Černý potok) also known as the Sernitzbach from the right.

Retention basin in Lauenstein / Eastern Ore Mountains
As a result, the Müglitz cut a 14 km long, more than 100 m deep, steep-walled valley into the gneiss lying here. In front of the town of Lauenstein in the Eastern Ore Mountains, it flows through a retention basin, which can store 5 km³ of water in the event of a flood. North of the city of Lauenstein, it includes the Red Water (also known as Rote Müglitz). The regular draining of ferrous processing residues from the tin washes around Altenberg was responsible for the name.

In front of Glashütte there is a quartz porphyry bar where the river turns to the east and in Glashütte takes up the Prießnitz from the left. The Trebnitz flows from the right at Oberschlottwitz. It then passes through the communities of Müglitztal, Weesenstein, the town of Dohna and flows into the Elbe in Heidenau. The Müglitz has a total of 19 tributaries.
