The Battle of Ostrołęka, fought on May 26, 1831 during the November Uprising, was characterized by, among other things, a daring charge by the 4th battery of light horse artillery under the command of Lt. Col. Józef Bem. This charge, effectively firing grapeshot at the approaching Russians, allowed the Polish units to withdraw from the battlefield. Despite this, the battle ended in defeat for the Poles, although their strategic withdrawal saved them from complete defeat.
