Because here, south of Altwarp in the area of the former Haff reservoir, an inland dune massif was formed, which consists of irregularly arranged dune ridges. These dunes were created thanks to westerly and northwesterly winds after the last ice age.

Hiking
The dune areas at Altwarp cover silver grass, sheep fescue, blue-green schiller grass, mountain hairline and Carthusian carnation. The endangered kerb ant Formica foreli lives on the dunes.
