The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Faggio is located in the municipality of Montecopiolo in the heart of the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Park. Legend has it that one day among the pastures of the mountain, two shepherd children were helped by the miraculous intervention of the Madonna who appeared to them as a sacred image on a beech tree. They wanted to transport the image downstream, to the town, to be able to honor it properly. Miraculously the next day the sacred image was back on the beech tree. It was a sign that a sanctuary had to be built in that place and dedicated to the Virgin. The church that already existed in 1200, as documents testify, was very different from what it currently is; in ancient times it was a simple cell and was also called "Hermitage of Santa Maria della Cella". The most recent renovation project dates back to the post-World War II period: on this occasion the old rooms were enlarged, a portico was built for separate access to the hermitage and a new bell tower was built in place of the ancient cell. These interventions unfortunately led to the complete destruction of the ancient original 13th century building. In the sanctuary there is a wooden statue of the Madonna, probably as old as the cell. Some testimonies from 1578, regarding the need for its restoration, certainly make it date well before that date.(Source: prolocomontecopiolo.it/il-santuario-della-madonna-del-faggio)
