The Fountain of the Oysterwomen (Les Laveuses d'Huîtres) on the Place de la République of the 1919 Nantes-born artist Jean Fréour captures a scene from the time when the oysters have not been bred, but in large "caravanes" lined with countless sailboats were taken from the bottom of the bay. The work of the women involved sorting the shellfish by size. Then they had to be cleaned by being repeatedly pulled through the water in baskets until they were cleared of the sand.
