The church was built in the 12th century on the site of a much older 5th century church. Due to numerous reconstructions, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements can be seen today. There are numerous monuments, including a 13th-century fresco depicting the Madonna and Child and a 15th-century marble tabernacle.
