Opposite the entrance to the Johanniter-Burg there is a large plane tree that shades the whole square. Hippocrates, the forefather of modern medicine, is said to have planted the plane tree himself and taught under this tree. When the apostle Paul came to Kos a few centuries later, he taught Christianity under the same tree. The ground around the plane tree is bordered by a low wall. On the north side of the wall there is an ancient sarcophagus. It was converted into a fountain during the Ottoman rule. The trunk diameter is more than four meters and the crown diameter is about 18 m. Due to insect and fungal infestation, the trunk has now been completely hollowed out. The rest of the trunk has been painted a protective red paint on the inside. The branches have been supported with iron bars since 1975 so that they do not break due to their weight or the wind. In addition to the old trunk, two new shoots have grown from the roots of the tree, thanks to which the plane tree of Hippocrates will live on for many years to come. The dome of the purification fountain belonging to the neighboring loggia mosque collapsed during the earthquake on July 21, 2017. Unfortunately, the restoration work is progressing slowly. The area at the plane tree of Hippocrates is therefore still partially cordoned off.
