The Big Banyan Tree is a banyan tree that was planted during the Sui Dynasty (581-618) at least 1400 years ago. I have chosen not to add a picture of the tree itself to this Highlight because the experience of seeing it the first time is just amazing. Be sure to get close enough to the tree to have a good look at its trunks.

At the river, you can take a bamboo raft across the water for ¥10, on the other side there are a few vendors and interesting rocks as well as an allegedly 1200 year old turtle. You can then walk back over the bridge and just after the bridge is another entrance to the Banyan Tree area, where no ticket check was done when we were there. So if you want to skimp on the entrance fees, you can try here first. Fees are ¥19 for adults and ¥10 for kids for the Banyan Tree or ¥30/¥15 for a Banyan Tree plus Moon Hill combo ticket, which makes sense because you won’t want to miss Moon Hill.
