Originally located outside the city walls, this square is now located in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, not far from the Palais Monclar.
This square was once named after Bertrand Bérici, Consul of Aix, who lived here in the early 15th century. It was renamed when it was adorned with three elm trees, which in turn gave way to the traditional plane trees to provide beautiful shade. Its original purpose was to be a horticultural market, where a wide variety of indoor plants and some exotic plants could be found. A love of gardens has always been a tradition in Provence…
The discreet early 17th-century fountain consists of a polygonal basin and a short structure, rising from a cylindrical pedestal, itself decorated with floral decorations at its base. Water gushes from four cannons, where a well once stood. Everything is made from Calissanne and Bibémus stone.
