The castle in Schwaigern in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg was built by the Lords of Neipperg in 1702 in place of an earlier manor house and expanded to its current size after 1850.
Neipperg Castle was the headquarters of the Lords of Neipperg up until the 16th century. After that, Klingenberg Castle became the headquarters until the new castle was built in Schwaigern.
The castle, which is located next to the town church on the north-eastern edge of the historic center of Schwaigern, was built in Baroque style from 1702 in place of the earlier Schwaigern Castle, which was destroyed in 1690, for Field Marshal Eberhard Friedrich von Neipperg (1655-1725). The castle was extended and rebuilt on various occasions, with the plans for the extension being drawn up by Gottlob Georg Barth as early as 1835, but not implemented until the years 1847 to 1871. The west wing was built in 1850 and the south wing in 1866. From 1860 to 1871, the Neo-Renaissance castle church was built with the participation of Christian Friedrich von Leins. In 1898 the castle was remodeled under Count Reinhard von Neipperg (1856-1919). In 1984 the roof truss was extensively renovated.
The castle is a four-sided, two-storey complex, the ground plan of which cannot be overlooked from the outside due to the narrow inner-city development and the adjacent inaccessible gardens and farm buildings. The south wing has a passage portal, the north wing is open between the palace chapel and the coach house, so that the palace road crosses the inner courtyard of the complex and divides it into western and eastern halves.
The upper floors of the castle buildings were once open to the courtyard and were successively closed in the course of various conversions. To the south-east, the wing buildings on the ground floor towards the inner courtyard are designed with representative arcades, while the west half is more dominated by the farm buildings located there. To the north-west is a large farmyard, to the north-east the large, park-like castle garden, which is not open to the public.
The historical art treasures in the castle include an important library and archive, a large collection of valuable furniture, a collection of deer antlers and a large number of paintings and pictures.
