The license to build the railway was granted by the Prussian law of May 21, 1883. On February 8, 1887, the first steam train traveled the 25.77 km long railway from Münster via the pilgrimage town of Telgte to Warendorf. The line was built by the Prussian State Railway. On June 25, 1887, the entire line to Lippstadt was put into operation. Since September 2003 the route has been operated by the NordWestBahn with modern railcars. Freight traffic was completely stopped. Since the timetable change in winter 2013/2014, the Eurobahn has been serving the line.
