Russendorp is located in a tapering piece of Bergeijkse Heide that used to belong to the former Dutch municipality of Luyksgestel, but was exchanged with Belgium in 1843 for a strip of the Bladelse Heide. A small settlement arose of people who started to cultivate the heath there, but were so far removed from their villages that they built temporary homes of sod, consisting of rushes. These rush or pitrus sods are called 'Russians' in Dialect. So the name has nothing to do with inhabitants of Russia.
