Many residents of Obernsees like Friedrich Maisel had brewing rights, his son Andreas (born 1843) turned it into a modern brewery and malt house. The Maisel brewery in Obernsees existed from 1852 to 1982. Friedrich Maisel's other sons, Eberhardt and Hans, founded the well-known Gebr. Maisel brewery in nearby Bayreuth in 1887.
