This wayside shrine is the first of 7 stations on the historic footpath from Herl to Merheim. Such processional routes are very common on the right bank of the Rhine. They were often created during plagues, cattle plagues or weather disasters to ask for salvation.

The center of the old procession route was lost due to the construction of a fortress (1876) and a motorway junction (1974). But most of the stations have recently been rebuilt. Now the path leads over two bridges over the autobahn t1p.de/55gon. Great mix of medieval and modern - and still in the countryside.

Now that I'm there, I want to briefly explain the wayside shrine that stands on the corner of the Merheimer Heide. (Photo) It is a registered small monument and dates from 1830.

This wayside shrine was donated by the Merheim Brotherhood in honor of the Sorrowful Mother of God and formed the first of seven footfall stations between Herl and Merheim. Unfortunately, apart from this one and one at St. Gereon, they are no longer preserved. The trail to the footfall station began at the Johann Nepomuk chapel and ended at the Sankt Gereon church in Merheim.
