The George Monument
Ceremonial unveiling of the monument in 1897
On October 12, 1997, the Prince Georg von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt memorial was reopened after extensive restoration. This happened exactly 100 years after its unveiling.
The namesake Prince Georg Albert von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was born on November 23, 1838. After the death of his father in 1869 he took over the government business. On January 19, 1890, he died as a result of pneumonia during a flu epidemic.
Even before the prince's death, there was the idea of erecting a monument to him in what was then Blankenburg. His reign fell into the Gründerzeit, which led to an upswing and so e.g. B. also led to the opening of the Blankenburg train station in 1884. The obelisk was finally financed by donations on October 12th.
