Hiking
Charcoal burning started in the 1300s, with evidence of forges dating to the 1500s. The blacksmiths worked the iron and copper mined in the valley.
Slate mines provided roofing material for local buildings.
Slate was also exported out of the valley by the ‘slate cart’, which was the valley's main method of communication with the outside world. The driver took shopping or delivery requests, as few other people left or entered the valley.
