You wouldn't expect to find an Eiffel bridge in the heart of Haute-Loire! The Eiffel company obtained the contract in 1887 for the construction of this bridge over the Allier. It was completed in 1888, just after the construction of the Garabit viaduct and the framework of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

This work made it possible to open up the village, while providing it with an important economic network. The transport of materials, previously impossible in this mountainous area, very isolated at the time, was no longer possible. The bridge was restored in the 2000s to maintain the local economy.

The linguistic proximity of the "Pont Eiffel", which spans the river here in the French town of Monistrol-d'Allier, and the low mountain range "Eifel" in the far west of Germany is no coincidence: The family of the designer - whose world-famous Tower of Paris (named after its builder) is probably known to everyone - has German roots. The ancestors of the Eiffel Tower builder Gustave EIFFEL come from the Eifel town of Marmagen (in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia). The village square there - if you are interested, see the following hiking highlight komoot.com/de-de/highlight/1830307 - is named after him.
