The approximately 11 meter high Pilsum lighthouse was completed at the end of the 19th century as one of four beacons on the East Frisian North Sea coast. Its yellow-red "striped sock paint" gives it its unmistakable appearance and made the lighthouse one of the most famous landmarks in East Friesland.
