The (German) St. Mary's Church has of course been spared from the devastation of the Lübeck. Today the cathedral is the only one of the once outstanding churches.

Visby Cathedral (Swedish: Visby domkyrka), or Visby Cathedral, which is also known under the original name of St. Mary's Church, is the only remaining main medieval church in the old Hanseatic city of Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland. It has been the Episcopal Church of the Visby Diocese of the Church of Sweden since 1572.

Anyone visiting Visby simply cannot avoid this place of worship. The impressive and really beautiful cathedral can be seen from pretty much every direction.

The cathedral, previously consecrated as St. Mary's Church, is the only remaining main church in Visby on Gotland.

When the construction of this church in Visby began in the 12th century, it was initially a three-aisled basilica in the Romanesque style that was common at the time. The transept was flanked on the east side. The tower on the west side was also part of it from the start. The lower part of the tower from the Gründerzeit has been preserved. Lübeck merchantmen and merchants, who had their strategic place on Gotland as Gotland sailors, initiated the construction of this church. As is so often the case on Gotland, local limestone was used as the building material. In 1225 the church was consecrated to Saint Mary.
