Summit of Deffend

At the top of the Deffend hill, you reach the orientation table which offers you a sublime 180° view of Sainte-Maxime, the Gulf of St Tropez, the Massif des Maures and the Esterel. On a clear day, you will have the opportunity to admire the Mercantour Massif in the distance.

A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE DEFFEND
The presence of numerous defensive walls and archaeological clues have made it possible to discover that the site of Deffend was once a Celtic Ligurian oppidum occupied in the Iron Age. Thereafter, the populations will abandon the sites in height, before briefly occupying them again under the Roman Empire, particularly in a situation of insecurity, because they allowed an alert system between the oppida of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and reporting a danger of pirate attacks from the sea.
It was in the Middle Ages that the legal French term of the old regime "DEFFEND" takes on its full meaning and qualifies lands closed by the lord, to prohibit access or even the right to hunt.
