I certainly wouldn't classify Rustika, at 290 meters above sea level, as a "mountain village," unless you consider anything that isn't a beach a "mountain." What's characteristic of this region southwest of Rethymno is its Venetian heritage, which is reflected in the architecture (and in the place names).
However, the Polopetros tavern on the village square definitely makes a visit here a culinary experience. It offers traditional dishes that go far beyond the typical tourist fare.
