The Mittelland Canal (MLK) branches off from the Dortmund-Ems Canal west of Osnabrück near Bergeshövede and, after a length of around 325 km, flows into the Elbe-Havel Canal in Hohenwarthe near Magdeburg. As a central part of the only west-east waterway in Northern Germany, it connects the river areas of the Rhine, Ems, Weser and Elbe and also provides the connection to Berlin and the Eastern European waterways.
