The 13th century Lutheran St. Nicholas Church in Apen is a real beauty with its separate tower in the center of Apen. In the pre-Reformation period, it was consecrated to Saint Nicholas, who is considered the patron saint of seafarers in the Catholic Church. By the way, the tower was built in the 15th century.
There is a café right at the foot of the church, where those inclined can enjoy coffee and cake in the shade of the church tower.

Old church from the 13th century with an atypical design, nave separated from the tower.

The St. Nicholas Church in the municipality of Apen was built in 1239. The church is an early Gothic brick church that stands on the old cemetery in Apen. Between 1990 and 1995, the church building was extensively renovated. The bell tower stands separately next to the church. There are two bells in the bell tower of the St. Nicholas Church. An older, smaller bell dates from around the 1350s and is one of the oldest bells in northwest Germany. This bell is also called the Catherine Bell because it bears the image of Saint Catherine. The larger bell was cast in 1621 and was brought to Apen by soldiers during the Thirty Years' War. The church tower of the St. Nicholas Church was built in 1497.
