Natural beauty meets history along the banks of the Swalm. This beautiful river, located in the south of the Netherlands, stretches for about 45 kilometers through the provinces of Limburg and North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.

The Swalm rises in the German Schwalmtal and then meanders through a picturesque landscape of forests, meadows and picturesque villages before finally flowing into the Meuse near Swalmen. The river is surrounded by a rich flora and fauna, making it a true paradise for nature lovers and hikers.

In addition to its natural splendor, the Swalm also has a fascinating historical significance. Along its banks, we find numerous archaeological finds and historical monuments, testifying to human activity dating back to prehistoric times. From old watermills to castles and estates, the Swalm region is steeped in cultural heritage.

The Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park (NMSN) is a cross-border nature park in Germany and the Netherlands that was established in 2002. It is a regionally significant local recreation area. It is 870 km² in total. It takes its name from the rivers Maas, Schwalm and Nette that flow through it.

It is often equated with the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. However, this was founded in 1965; it is now integrated into the NMSN.

It covers an area in the districts of Kleve, Viersen and Heinsberg and in the city of Mönchengladbach in Germany and in the municipalities of Roermond, Roerdalen, Venlo, Echt-Susteren, Leudal and Maasgouw in the Netherlands.

The Swalm rises in the urban area of Erkelenz in the Geneiken district. A few kilometers below the source, it flows through a wetland south of the Wegberg district of Tüschenbroich at about 85 m above sea level. NHN. From there, the water mainly flows through the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, with its riverbed between the Rur, Nette and Niers. It also flows through Wegberg, Lüttelforst, past Waldniel and Niederkrüchten, through the Hariksee, through Brüggen-Born, Brüggen and Swalmen. From the total length of the Schwalm to the confluence with the Maas, near the village of Swalmen at about 12 m NAP, 13 kilometers run on Dutch territory.

Parts of the river course have a natural meandering course.
