You'll find two different wooden woodpecker statues a short distance from each other. And they are different species of woodpeckers. One is the green woodpecker, which everyone has at least heard in the forest. The second woodpecker is not, as one might expect, the spotted woodpecker, but the black woodpecker. And that one is quite special. You can recognize the green woodpecker by its laughing call. But it's certainly not entirely green: you can see a black spot around its eye, and its head has a beautiful red crown. The black woodpecker is completely black but has a red crown. It is the largest woodpecker in Europe, leads a relatively secluded life, and is a champion of large nesting cavities that other animals also use. You can read more on the signs on the statues. The green woodpecker statue in the series of statues for the nature trail by artist Roel van Wijlick, "Boom tot Beeld" (Tree to Sculpture), is recognizable because it features two woodpeckers.
