The church village burned down in 1921 except for 27 houses. In the olden days, going to church was a multi-day undertaking for the widely scattered rural population. Most of the time, people also used this opportunity to do business in the city, traded at the market, etc. And to offer these churchgoers shelter, the church village was built.

The historic church town of Vilhelmina consists of around 20 old wooden houses. These remind of the life of the people several hundred years ago. Today the buildings house shops, a museum and a Sami gallery.
