This sculpture commemorates the role of women who worked in Britain’s forest during WW2. They were known as "lumberjills" and there were over 9,000 of them. They were recruited from all over the UK and sent to forests where they carried out felling and crosscutting trees by hand, among other very heavy physical jobs.
