The chapel on the Kerkhoekwegel was built near the site of the first parish church of Merelbeke. This church was built in the 10th century and has been renovated and expanded several times. At the end of the 19th century the church was demolished because it had become too small and dilapidated.
A new church was built on the Hundelgemsesteenweg where the new village center of Merelbeke was located. The shape of the former church is indicated by a hedge near the chapel.
