The Peperbus got its current shape in the years 1750-1752. In those years, the church was rebuilt as a result of the shelling of the city by the French in 1747. The shelling and siege by the French led to the fall of the Bergen op Zoom fortress. The Bergen op Zoom fortress, designed by Menno van Coehoorn, was considered impregnable before that.
