The Posthof was built as Burgmannshof in the 16th century to function as a post office.
Nienburg's central and convenient location with the possibility of crossing the Weser to the west was a decisive and advantageous factor in the location decision.
As a transshipment point for mail and a rest stop for stagecoach travelers, the building's central location in Nienburg's old town was an invigorating element.
The royal post office was housed in the Posthof until 1864.
The building was then used as a residential building.
During this time, the Posthof was expanded to include extensions and neighboring houses. Over the last few decades the building has fallen into disrepair.
It was not until 1974 that a discussion about a contemporary and public use of the post office developed in Nienburg.
The city council's resolution of April 13, 1976 initiated the renovation and establishment of the city library in the Posthof to revitalize Nienburg's old town and develop the district.
On October 15, 1977, the Nienburg city library was opened in the Posthof.

On the right side of the old post office is the Nienburger Glockenspiel with 10 bells. It rings the hourly bell every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and plays one of the 28 available melodies every hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6.25 p.m.
