This granite sculpture commemorates Greek refugees who arrived here in 1676 with three galleys. They were expelled from their homeland in the Peloponnese by the Ottomans and were given asylum here in what was then Genoese Corsica. Driven out again by rebellious Corsicans in the meantime, they were granted new land nearby as compensation a century later and founded Gargèse. Even today, the local Greek Orthodox Church reminds us that Cargèse was founded by Greece.

Many have died as a result of expulsion and flight. They were able to settle in Corsica. But originally this did not always result in the friendship of the Corsicans living here at the time, so the odyssey continued. History shows that today Cargese is a gem and tourist magnet, where Corsicans live peacefully together, celebrate and even pass on and remember the story with friendship and pride through this monument. What can be deduced from this today is that difficulties at the beginning can lead to a good end through increasing acceptance, but it all takes time.
