The burial vault was built in 1811 by order of Maurits Jacob Eyck van Zuylichem (1764-1853). He inherited Eyckenstein from his father Adriaan Eyck in 1802. He was very interested in forestry and agriculture and he spent much of his life beautifying the estate and making it more profitable. For that reason he bought land to expand his property. He also had hiking trails built. The folly Temple of Pan was the centerpiece of some of these walks. Finances were no obstacle for Eyck. "Providence ordered that I enter into an advantageous marriage, whereby I obtained about 7,000 guilders in interest, which, in addition to my income as a councilor, enabled me to live on an orderly ample footing, and to pay for some improvements on Eyckenstein," he said.
