The fortress of “Sacsayhuamán” (in Quechua this means contented falcon) is one of the most important archaeological complexes of the Inca Empire and is located above the city, at the gates of Cusco. When you visit the complex, you will be amazed: one stone was placed on top of the other with the utmost precision and an impressive technique.

      An absolute highlight above Cusco.

The facility was intended to serve as a place of representation and, as a military fortification, to protect the most endangered access to the city. However, construction forms that most likely point to sanctuaries, such as niche squares, circular arenas of around 100 m in diameter and developed stairs in isolated boulders, speak against an interpretation as a defensive structure. The complex was partially destroyed during the Spanish conquest, and the structure has since been further damaged by earthquakes.

The Inca Pachacútec Yupanqui and Túpac Yupanqui are considered the builders of the site. According to Pedro Cieza de León, 20,000 people worked on it during the 70-year construction period in the second half of the 15th century.

Extremely beautiful! Impossible to imagine how they could have moved and wedged these giant boulders of rock that reach 4 meters in height and I cannot imagine how much they can weigh. Which work of high engineering within walking distance of the city center
