    cotton grass
On renatured raised bog areas it is a first colonizer of the almost vegetation-free areas after industrial peat extraction. It belongs to the sourgrass family. With its fibrous decaying leaves
it contributes to peat formation. The perennial plant reaches heights of growth between 20 and 90 cm.
The flowering period is from March to May. The flowers are rather inconspicuous in contrast to the woolly infructescence, which is often mistaken for the flower.

    Sheathed cotton grass
It has only one flower per stem and grows like clumps

    Narrow-leaved cotton grass

It has several flowers on a stem. It forms foothills - unlike the sheath cotton grass. The long foothills strengthen the oscillating lawn.

    swinging lawn
Swinging grass is a floating plant cover that grows from the shore on the water surface out into a body of water. It consists of peat moss and plants such as cotton grass, rushes and other grasses. As the soil layer thickens, smaller shrubs also grow there. It takes several decades for the plant cover to be sustainable.
When trying to push a long pole into the ground (small picture), one can find that it is difficult to get through the rooted ground at first. Then, when the pole reaches the water below, the pole disappears so quickly that you have to hold on to it. Swinging lawns are not always stable. There is a risk of drowning when entering.

    peat moss
On average, peat moss grows 10 cm per summer season. However
the regrowing tips and in winter the weight of snow and ice compress the water-soaked parts of the plant, reducing the annual increase in height to about 1 mm.
Peat moss can store 20 to 30 times its own weight in water. Peat moss has no roots. It continues to grow at the top and dies off at the bottom.
Over the centuries, the weight of the growing peat moss compresses the dead material and turns it into peat. Peat is an early stage in the conversion of plants to coal.

In raised bogs like the Himmelmoor, the water is acidic and low in nutrients. A high level of adaptability is required of the animals and plants in this environment. In the fringes of raised bogs you can find swamp calla, rushes and sedges.

        The marsh harrier
The long-winged marsh harriers have a slow, deliberate flapping of wings and tend to fly low.

        The Sparrowhawk
Sparrowhawks are significantly smaller than goshawks, but resemble them in shape. They fly at low altitudes but live very hidden.

        the hawk
Goshawks have a very agile flight with their short, wide wings. They hunt by surprise attack and are difficult to spot.

        The sea eagle
Eagles are our largest and most graceful birds of prey, flapping their wings slowly and often gliding soaring.

        The tree hawk
Falcons, with their slender shape and rapid flapping of wings, are the fastest of our birds of prey. With their long wings they hunt in a very rapid nosedive.

        The common buzzard
Buzzards are similar in movement and body to the eagle, but are significantly smaller. They often circle in the air for hours or perch on a branch to lurk for prey.
