Originally it was a chapel that was located in the immediate vicinity of the castle and was built by the Lords Nothaft around 1340. Thierstein was first mentioned as a parish in 1438. After the Reformation in 1517, especially after Margrave Georg Friedrich took office in 1557, Protestant churches were set up everywhere, including in Thierstein. In 1558 the chapel was elevated to the status of a regular parish church. The exact age of the church itself can no longer be determined precisely today. However, the building findings of at least the choir go back to the late Gothic period.
