After the second Turkish siege (1683) numerous baroque garden palaces were built in the suburbs of Vienna. The Palais Schönburg (formerly Palais Starhemberg) is one of the few of them that is still preserved today. The originally undeveloped Schaumburg estate on the Wieden had been owned by the Starhemberg family since 1450. Count Gundacker Thomas von Starhemberg, a half-brother of Count Ernst Rüdiger, the defender of Vienna during the second Turkish siege, expanded the property through several acquisitions at the beginning of the 18th century.
