During the First World War, the archives of the parish were destroyed, so a lot of information has been lost about the history of the church of Neerlinter, with the Irish missionary and founder of the monastery of Fosses (Namur), Foillanus, as patron saint. However, there is already mention of a church in 1139 and since 1236 the patronage and tithing rights were in the possession of the abbey of Maagdendal of Oplinter. A new church was reportedly built in 1408, which was partly or completely rebuilt and/or enlarged in 1489 after a heavy fire. It is from that time that the choir and the south chapel of the current church date. In 1713 there was a fire in the church tower and after repairs a brick tower was renovated around 1786-1790. There were also various changes in the 19th century, with the final construction phase being an enlargement with new naves and a transept. More about construction, furniture, organ and the like at inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/42597

The church is located on a hill and there are beautiful field roads and neighborhood roads in the immediate vicinity that offer a beautiful view of it. The church is also surrounded on several sides by an old and more recent cemetery. The portal of the church is open.

Be sure to take a look at the surrounding houses on the hill and the parsonage, but especially at the wall on the street side where you will find numerous old ornaments, a cross and a chapel if this fascinates you.

If you walk towards the church (road that goes up to the hill) you will see the memorial for war victims in the beginning. Across the street you can easily reach the small village with some immovable heritage such as the library (once the town hall), an old café, a water pump and the former building of the "Watering van de Grote Gete" with a font that resembles reminiscent of the Wild West.

Very beautiful church. Different in style than ours in the Alps. Definitely worth a visit.😉
