Something special gem. the saying "Have is better than need" .....

Impressively large system for our "small" Erft. The mighty dike almost conveys feelings of the North Sea. Ahoy!

Built to dam the Erft during floods. Happened once in the last 30 years. Beautiful paths.

Edit: As a child I always wondered why the basin had to be so big. Now I've found out for myself why. It's crazy when the basin is full.

It's beautiful there. But the path is often very muddy.

To protect Vernich and Weilerswist from flooding on the Erft River, the "Erft Association" built a dam in a floodplain near Horchheim between 1979 and 1983. By regulating the flow, a flood retention basin was created. The dam is 5 meters high and 840 meters long. It was designed to withstand a "once-in-a-century flood." However, the flood of July 14/15, 2021, was significantly stronger. The dam did not break, but was eventually overflowed. Its repairs were not completed until summer 2024.
