Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena)

The Cathedral of Siena, located in the homonymous square, stands in the city of the Tuscan Palio as a clear example of an Italian Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Consecrated in 1179, it houses works by Pinturicchio, Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini and Nicola Pisano.

The Cathedral of Siena, also known as the Duomo di Siena, is one of the most impressive buildings in the city and one of the few built in the Gothic style. Construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century and lasted until the 15th century, with numerous changes and extensions over the years. The cathedral has a link pattern of black and white marble on the outside, a symbolic reference to the horses of the city's founders. The facade, completed in 1380, is richly decorated and contains many paintings. The interior of the cathedral has the shape of a Latin cross with three naves and several pillars with black and white horizontal stripes. The Duomo's dome was finished in 1264 and the choir was expanded in 1317. Despite the ambition to become the largest Gothic structure in Italy, the cathedral ultimately became smaller than originally planned.

The cathedral of Siena, officially the metropolitan cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is the main place of Catholic worship in Siena, in Tuscany, the episcopal seat of the metropolitan archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino; the building is located in the homonymous square, in the Terzo di Città.
