The Bistensee was formed during the Vistula Ice Age, which began 70,000 years ago.
When it receded around 13,000 years ago, a glacier with a thickness of a good 3,000 m left a valley with its melt water and formed today's Hüttener and Duvenstedt mountains with its moraines. The frontal and push moraines reached heights of up to 72 m.
Noteworthy is the watershed east of the lake. The Bistensee drains into the North Sea, while the Wittensee, which is within sight, runs out to the Baltic Sea.
Today's water surface of the Bistensee is about 1.54 km².
It has an average depth of 7.5 m. A few more superlatives: Greatest depth 14.3 m.
Greatest length 2,516 m. Greatest width 828 m. The lake surface is almost flat

The "Junge Sorge" flows into the lake in the north-east. She leaves him in the West
