historyEditOn August 20, 1933, the airfield on the uninhabited Alexanderheide in the north of the city was ceremoniously opened as part of a major flight day. As early as 1936, the Air Force took over the airfield as an air base (code name "Kumpel"). From 1939 various associations moved to Oldenburg. On May 9, 1945, Oldenburg was occupied by Canadian forces. The following table shows a list of selected flying active units (without school and supplementary units) of the Wehrmacht Air Force that were stationed here between 1939 and 1945.

The Oldenburg Air Base was a military airfield in Oldenburg and from 1964 to 1993 the location of the 43rd Fighter-Bomber Squadron of the Bundeswehr Air Force. Today there is a solar park on part of the site. A new district is to be built on the part transferred to the city of Oldenburg – formerly the barracks area and flight halls.
