The legend of the Barcelos Rooster is an important part of Portuguese culture. She touches on aspects of everyday life such as justice, pride, destiny and belief in miracles that are held in high esteem in Portugal. At the same time, the legend reflects the playful and distanced handling of the Portuguese with secular and religious hierarchies. Here the humanity and humor of the common people stands against the elites who distance themselves from them and often seem arbitrary.

According to tradition, the townspeople were worried because a crime had been committed and the culprit could not be found. One day a Galician man appeared who aroused suspicion and the authorities decided to arrest him. Although he protested his innocence, no one believed his claim that he was a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela to fulfill a vow.

The man sentenced to death by hanging asked to be brought before the judge, who was having a feast with some friends, and repeated his declarations of innocence. When no one believed him, the Galician pointed to a roasted rooster that was on the table and said: "As surely as I am innocent, this rooster will crow when I am hanged."

And what no one thought possible happened! Just as the pilgrim was about to be hanged, the rooster rose from the table and crowed. The judge ran to the gallows and, seeing that a knot in the rope had prevented the noose from being tightened around the condemned man's neck, he immediately had him released and allowed to go on his way in peace.

A few years later, the pilgrim returned to Barcelos and had a monument erected in honour of Saint James and the Virgin Mary.

The representation of the colourful rooster of Barcelos was a symbol of tourism in Portugal for many years.
