Once part of the Chequers estate, Coombe Hill was bequeathed to the nation when Checkers was given to the government at the beginning of the 20th century.
This is fun little stretch - a straightforward climb, or an occasionally muddy, but totally non-technical descent. It does, sadly bypass the viewpoint to the north at the top of the hill, which boasts a monument commemorating the Boer War. This last is accessible by footpath.
