Just after WW1, steel was in short supply and so a number of boats were built of concrete, the tug 'Cretehauser' being one of them.

The boat was damaged in WW2 and after being used as an emergency breakwater, it was towed upstream in 1942. Unfortunately, it only made it as far as Claxheugh Rock, where upon it sank and has sat, half-submerged in the same spot ever since.

Cretehawser was launched at Southwick in March 1919. It was one of only twelve powerful, single screw ferro-concrete vessels ordered by the Admiralty in 1918. Cretehauser was the first of the dozen to be built in Sunderland by the Wear Concrete Building Company Limited, a subsidiary of Swan Hunter.
