An astonishing garden on the banks of the Loire
On June 24, 1816, Maximilien Siffait (1780-1861) and his wife Marie-Louise Jourdan (1783-1819) became owners of La Gérardière, in the town of Cellier. They settled there with their two children, Jeanne-Louise (1811-1830) and Oswald (1816-1877). The property then consists of an archipelago of land and farms around the castle and the park.

From 1817, Maximilien embarked on the development of a completely unusable plot but with a magnificent view of the Loire. On this rocky outcrop overlooking the river at almost 70 meters high, he built an astonishing garden descending in terraces to the bank. The monumental character of the site, the labyrinthine architecture embellished with niches, turrets and stairs, the colours, the trompe-l'œil make the garden a veritable "follies" in the eyes of people and particularly from the pen of the authors of the tourist guides of that time, intended for the journey by boat along
