1. Alessandro Pasqualini (1493-1559); Italian architect of the "new" Jülich (city fire of 1547) with a floor plan of the ideal city and the citadel.
2. Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863); Son of Jülich and an important romantic landscape painter (Düsseldorf painting school).
3. The scientist with a piston and an atom; Symbol for the "new citizens" and the change in Jülich through the research center.
4. The Jülich farmer with harvested grain and the “white gold”, the sugar beets; Symbol for Jülich's self-confidence and stability.

"Muttkrat" is the nickname for Jülichers. There is no clear explanation for this name. The most conclusive interpretation is that "Mutt" in the dialect means mud and "Krat" is a toad: ellritzen.de/MuttkratBrunnen.htm
