The street is an exceptional architectural contribution to road construction from the beginning of the 19th century (it was built in the period 1810-1811). It was never finished, so it is possible to reconstruct all its construction phases. It was built, or rather placed, on a slope of Biokovo, between 357.41 and 443.73 meters above sea level. The slope is not higher than 6%, which makes the road very comfortable for cart driving, horseback riding and walking. Architect Frane Zavoreo is the designer of the French road on Biokovo.
Information boards are placed along the road, which will explain to you the manner and purpose of the construction of this truly exceptional and precious road. In addition, the entire street is a breathtaking viewpoint of Brela, Makarska Riviera and islands!
(WARNING: Easier but mountain trail!)
During their rule (1808 – 1813), the French quickly built the road across the whole of Dalmatia from Obrovac to the Bay of Kotor. The route is known as the Napoleonstrasse or the French road. It was created thanks to Napoleon's general and Duke of Dubrovnik, Auguste Marmont. Today he is known for many of the progressive measures he took on Croatian territory as Commander-in-Chief of Dalmatia and Governor-General of the Illyrian Provinces.
