It is the city gate turned towards Lucca. In the Middle Ages people used to go out from this direction to go to the other city.
The door is well preserved and well maintained even if today, of course, traffic passes through it.
It's an artistic element somewhat isolated from the rest of the city, so pass by if it's part of a larger itinerary. I advise against going here just to see this gate but I recommend including the stop in an itinerary.
