The church was built in 1783 and only got its steeple in 1883. The first bells were cast from a cannon captured by the French, which became cannons again in World War I. The current ones were installed in 1925 thanks to donations.

St. Johannis in Vlotho is the parish church of the Evangelical-Reformed parish of St. Johannis, which belongs to the Vlotho church district of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
In 1732, Reformed Christians who had immigrated from neighboring Lippe founded a congregation in Vlotho. In 1783 the church was built with the support of the Prussian King Friedrich II. The baroque central building is octagonal in plan and has a semicircular apse on the east side. In 1884 the tower was added to the west.
