The Flutter is a water mill.
It consists of a wing cross, which is attached directly to the drive shaft, and an Archimedean screw (= Roman water drum) through the rotary motion of which the water is transported upwards. The term “flutter” probably comes from the old Frisian fletta, which means “move” or “take away”.
Water screws were used in ancient Egypt 3000 years ago to irrigate the grain fields of the Nile valley.
They were powered by slaves using a hand crank.
The Greek mathematician Archimedes was the first to describe how they work and calculate their performance.

An Archimedean screw is a conveyor system that consists of a helix in a sloping tube and a trough at each end. The term screw pump is common, although it is neither a screw nor a pump. DIN 1184 describes it very aptly as a constant pressure lifting mechanism.

The invention of such a water lifting system dates back to ancient times and is usually attributed to the Greek physicist Archimedes. Historically, the main use is the transport of water to higher levels for irrigation and drainage purposes. Today bulk material is mostly conveyed with it.
